CTS Hairstylist Apprenticeship Update

On November 29, 2018, the Alberta Education Career and Technology Studies (CTS) team informed you of two items:

 (1)   the Hairstylist Provincial Apprenticeship Committee (PAC) made changes to the current Hairstylist apprenticeship course outline

(2)   the changes are going to be implemented for the 2019/20 school year.

We are therefore pleased to share that 46 Hairstylist (HSA) CTS apprenticeship courses (attached) have been approved. Combined these courses cover the first and second period technical training.

Our target for posting the courses and their teaching resources (e.g., course summaries, existing-to-new chart, rubrics) to the Alberta Education website in the fall of 2019, prior to the 2019/20 school year starting.

You are being provided with a copy of these courses and teaching resources in advance because the changes are significant, and we want to provide you with the maximum possible time to prepare for the 2019/20 school year.

As key reminders:

  •  Apprenticeship occupational areas offered within high schools are a joint effort between
  • Each apprenticeship area has a dedicated PAC that creates, reviews and updates trade-specific course outlines.
  • Course outlines are used to create 1-credit CTS apprenticeship courses.
    • This ensures that content taught within high schools is equivalent to what is taught at a post-secondary institution.
  • When course outlines are updated by the PAC, the Ministry of Education is obligated to update the corresponding 1-credit CTS courses.
    • This ensures alignment with the technical exam.
    • The Ministry of Education does not initiate the course outline changes.
  •  The revised HSA course outline has a greater focus on barbering, haircutting, and new and emerging technologies.
  • Alberta’s high school students who successfully complete all courses in a Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Apprenticeship Pathway are eligible to write the AIT exam for advanced standing in the first and second periods of technical training for the hairstylist apprenticeship.

  •  CTS Course Completion Record will soon be updated on the Tradesecrets website.

  • A journeyperson is still required to provide the instruction for all CTS apprenticeship courses.

  •   There are no changes to the current Cosmetology (COS) or Esthetics (EST) 1-credit CTS courses.
